The Perfect Starter Hair Care Routine For Your Teenager

This post is part of our archived content. While we’ve shifted focus, it still may be useful.

Your teenager may be getting to the age where they want to start experimenting with their hair.

Whether it’s a new cut, colour or chemical treatment, I’m all for allowing them to go for it if they are willing to put in the required hair care.

The teen years are for taking risks and making mistakes with different cuts, colours, treatments and styles.

If you are going to say yes to their new look, what are the must-have hair tools they need in their arsenal?

Start their hair care routine (and let’s be honest you’re probably paying for it) with these tried and tested products:

If she’s opting for a colour treatment, steer clear of damaging box dye and let a professional take care of it in a salon.

You can’t do any better than Daniel Galvin.

They are the masters of creating colour that looks expensive and glossy.

They work on all hair types – straight, afro and even synthetic.

Wherever she goes for a colour service, tell her to search for a salon and stylist that uses OLAPLEX.

Pre Shampoo Treatment

Ask for the OLAPLEX Stand Alone Treatment – a professional in-salon service that restores damaged and compromised hair by repairing it from the inside out.

Using patented bond-building technology, the treatment restructures the broken disulphide bonds in the hair.

To maintain the colour at home, start with the OLAPLEX No.3 Hair Perfector.

It’s a weekly at-home treatment, not a conditioner, that reduces breakage and visibly strengthens hair, improving its look and feel.

When used in conjunction with OLAPLEX No.0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment, this dynamic duo offers 68% more repair and 3 times stronger hair.

Use OLAPLEX No.0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment as the first step in a two-part at-home system with OLAPLEX No.3 Hair Perfector to strengthen and repair all types of damaged hair.

It was expensive but we’ve bought the entire at-home range – we love it that much!

Her hair (and we suggest you use it too) will be stronger, shinier, less prone to breakage, and will look and feel 10 times better.

We also like the Philip Kingsley Elasticizer.

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer

It’s a treatment you add to damp hair before you shampoo.

Containing castor oil, olive oil, mango and hibiscus, the treatment helps hydrate dry hair, strengthen strands and reduce breakage.

Scalp Treatment

Good hair comes from a clean scalp and you can’t find a better scalp treatment than the Philip Kingsley Anti-Dandruff Scalp Mask.

Flaky/Itchy Scalp Anti-Dandruff Mask

The mask contains salicylic acid and green tea extract to tackle the root causes of dandruff while reducing flakes.

Deep Conditioner

Can you tell we’re huge OLAPLEX fans?

Use the Intense Moisture Mask once a week on freshly washed hair for insanely soft and silky tresses.

Follow up with the No 7 Bonding Oil to add shine, protect from heat styling and environmental pollutants.

Heat Protection Spray

Overdoing it with the blow dryer and straightener can damage fragile strands so a heat protection spray is a must.

Umberto Giannini’s Grow Long & Smooth spray works on all hair types and is great for both diffusing and straightening.

It contains caffeine, black coffee and organic pea sprout extract to help repel moisture, de-frizz and protect against heat styling.

Blow Dryer

The Shark Flex Style is expensive but worth it.

We bought the 5-in-1 version and use it for blow drying straight, diffusing and adding loose waves.

The cheaper Revlon Round Brush dryer is pretty good too.

Straighteners

We all probably use our straighteners too much and we are big believers in investing in ones that are as kind to the hair as possible.

The L’oreal Steampod was created in conjunction with Rowenta (your mum probably had one of their clothing irons) and uses steam to transform the hair.

L'oreal steampod

Somehow, the steam doesn’t make your hair damp or frizzy and instead offers up to 91% less damage and up to 2x faster and smoother styling.

There’s a removable comb attachment so even on thick hair, one or two passes is enough.

Perfect for afro hair. Make sure you use Demineralised Water to fill the water receptacle.

Silk Pillowcase

Sleeping on silk as opposed to cotton is better for the skin and the hair and if she’s spent lots of money on colour, her hair is more fragile now.

add a silk pillowcase to your hair care routine

Sleeping on a silk pillowcase can help keep the hair hydrated and will result in smoother, frizz-free hair.
