Starting Over (Gently): Thinking About a New Career After Maternity Leave
There’s a moment, maybe it’s after the baby sleeps through the night for the first time, maybe it’s not for months, when you come up for air and realise: I’m not the same person who left this job.
And maybe I don’t want to go back.
Whether it’s burnout, boredom, or just the sense that your work no longer fits the version of you that’s returned, you’re not alone.
Lots of women reassess their careers after maternity leave, not because they suddenly want to ‘do it all,’ but because the old way doesn’t work anymore.
This isn’t about throwing your whole life in the air. It’s about moving gently toward something that makes more sense now.
Here’s how to start thinking through a career shift after maternity leave, even if you’re sleep-deprived, short on time, and not quite sure who you are right now.
Start with what’s changed (not what’s wrong)
You don’t have to hate your old job to want a different one. Ask yourself:

- What do I no longer have the capacity for?
- What do I value now that I didn’t before?
- Where do I feel most like myself?
It’s OK if the answers feel fuzzy. This is the beginning of a process, not a sudden reinvention.
Think in seasons, not forever
Not everything you do from here has to be ‘your calling.’ Think about what you need this year: more flexibility, more time at home, more space to think.
That can guide your next move, whether that’s part-time work, freelance projects, or a new industry entirely.
Get curious, not overwhelmed
Start small. Listen to a podcast about something you’re drawn to. Take an hour-long online course. Talk to someone doing work you admire. You’re allowed to experiment before you commit.
Rewrite what ‘work’ looks like for you now
The 9-to-5 office job might not be the best fit anymore. That doesn’t mean you’re less ambitious, it means you’re designing a life that includes work and everything else that matters. Look at options like:
- Project-based work
- Remote roles
- Job shares or flexible contracts
- Building a portfolio of income streams
Give yourself permission to evolve
You’re allowed to want something else. You’re allowed to take your time. You’re allowed to prioritise your family and your work and yourself.
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to start listening to what’s true for you now.
There’s no perfect time to start over. But there are quieter, gentler ways to begin. If the idea of a new career feels heavy, think of it instead as a slow return to yourself, one small decision at a time.
