To celebrate London Craft Week 2018 (May 7 to 13), take on arts and crafts with free family workshops led by artists, curators, ceramicists, dancers, mixologists and animal keepers.
The drop-in weekend events on 12 and 13 May are inspired by the ‘fantastical beasts’, animals and symmetrical patterns in the ceramics of William De Morgan. The leading ceramicist of the Victorian arts and crafts movement, 80 of De Morgan’s most sought-after works will be celebrated in Sublime Symmetry, a new exhibition opening on Friday 11 May.
The De Morgan-themed events offer all sorts of creative and visually engaging activities. The family workshops and activities include expressionist acrylic painting and drawing workshops with inspiring visual artist Rachel Gadsden; inventive clay tile and plate designing with ceramicist and teacher Adrienne Roberts; kaleidoscope-crafting, colouring-in, dance classes to the rhythm of De Morgan’s symmetrical shapes with dance artist Wendy Steatham; and for those brave enough, the unique opportunity to hold and learn about reptiles, amphibians and bugs with the helping hand of a keeper from Maynard’s Mini Zoo.
