REVIEW: VERDI ITALIAN KITCHEN AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL
When I think of the Royal Albert Hall, BBC proms and opera immediately come to mind. I don’t think really good Italian restaurants.
Having visited Verdi Italian restaurant at the Royal Albert Hall earlier today, my preconceptions have changed.
If you follow the blog, you know I’m intolerant to gluten and dairy which can suck the joy out of eating in restaurants.
There are only many times I can eat salad and fries. Actually I could eat fries all day. But I digress. I think Italian food, I think pizza and pasta and although a lot of high street chains do offer free-from versions, the flavour and consistency usually leaves a lot to be desired.
Not so at Verdi Italian Kitchen at the Royal Albert Hall – from starter to dessert, everything was delicious to look at, to smell and to eat.
And the service was impeccable! I always worry when I eat out somewhere nice with kids in tow. They tend to be loud or drop something but the staff didn’t give us a second glance and our lovely waiter (Valentina, she was amazing) was patient and friendly without being overbearing.
But I’m sure you want to see the food:
The kids’ menu is simple and easy on the pocket – we went for 3 courses for £9 each. Portions are generous and they’ll make exceptions for fussy eaters (sauce on the side please) in fact nothing is too much trouble.
Kids are kept entertained with the opposite side of menu – colouring in quizzes, word search etc.
Starter wise I tried to be good by having the Insalata di Giuseppe – pancetta, baby spinach, avocado and roasted peppers with a balsamic dressing – but when I saw that all pizzas can be made gluten or dairy free (intolerances only, not suitable for those with allergies as they are not made in a separate kitchen) I decided to take my chances.
And am I glad I did! Gluten free pizza usually tastes like thin toast (so disappointing) but this was as close to ‘real’ pizza base as I could remember – freshly made, thin and crispy with a proper crust.
It was so good!
Dessert was blood orange and lime sorbet and I finished off with fresh mint tea.
If your social calendar calls for regular visits to The Royal Albert Hall then you’re probably already familiar with Verdi Italian Kitchen and I recommend you dine pre or post event.
If, like me, you’re not a regular, make the trip – the food is good, the service perfect and the price easy on the pocket. You can go for drinks, brunch, afternoon tea or dinner.
Starters begin at £6.50 with mains from £10. They are open from 12pm to 9pm Tuesday to Sunday, with Afternoon Tea being served between 2pm and 4.30pm.
