REVIEW: THE GRILL, SMITHS OF SMITHFIELD

New Covent Garden Market is a London institution famous for its flowers, fruit and veg. If it’s fish and seafood you want, look no further than East London’s Billingsgate.

Any Londoner worth their salt, however, knows that for the very best in meat; Smithfield’s is your first and only choice.

And any honest London taxi driver will tell you that if you want the best cooked by the best, then Smiths of Smithfield is where you need to go.

We were invited to dine at The Grill on Level 2 for a fresh and exciting menu offering prime cuts of meat and locally sourced seasonal produce.

The décor was modern, spacious and clean. We were among the first diners of the evening so enjoyed being fussed over but equally given space to browse the menus.

The food came quickly and we were both impressed with how delicious and well-presented everything looked on the plate. The smells were incredible and every ingredient on the plate had its place and its chance to sing.

Our starters included seared Cornish scallops, smashed new season peas, smoked bacon loin crumb and lobster sauce and as a plant-based eater, an incredible heritage beetroot salad, with pear, chicory and candied spiced hazelnuts. Words cannot do this dish justice – the flavours were absolutely incredible! Everything was cooked to perfection and every ingredient expertly chosen.

For our main course we chose the 16oz, 28 day aged Scotch bone in ribeye (melt in the mouth delicious) and the black quinoa, pumpkin, spring greens, avocado, beetroot and pumpkin seed salad for the vegetarian which was packed with flavour. Sometimes it feels like the vegetarian/vegan dishes are an afterthought but for a venue that focuses on meat (and does an amazing job at it) the plant-based dishes were exceptionally good. Both were paired with perfectly fluffy yet crispy triple cooked chips.

There was barely room for dessert, but we soldiered through with a light and refreshing triple assortment of Jude’s sorbet and a classic sticky toffee pudding.

The whole experience was a culinary triumph and we left feeling well and truly stuffed. We took the stairs down and couldn’t help but peer into the floors below as we did, mentally making notes to come back and sample them too.
