Best for quick-fix slimming

The Frigi Thalgo Wrap - The Langham Hotel

Concentrating on the thighs and abdomen – most women’s trouble spots – the wrap helps activate surface circulation, tone the skin and increase elasticity.

After a quick application of Plasmalg Gel, you’ll be wrapped in Frigi Thalgo solution dipped bandages to stimulate blood flow. Be warned - the bandages are cold! The solution contains caffeine and menthol and it feels as if the pores on your skin are opening and receiving the menthol. It feels cold and minty – if it’s possible for something to ‘feel’ minty?

The 50-minute treatment ends with Thalgomince Massage Cream worked into your body using slimming massage movements. There’s very little we wouldn’t do for slimmer thighs and we have to confess, we had doubts on how massage and a few wraps could slim the legs but we were pleasantly surprised! To ensure it wasn’t just psychosomatic, a quick whip of the tape measure confirmed a centimetre ad indeed been lost from each thigh! Happy days. Of course the results don’t last forever but the massage is perfect to help you squeeze into your party dress or give yourself an extra slimming boost before you go out on holiday.

Cold but worth it!

Best for pre/post long haul flight

Imagine Spa at Hilton Heathrow Terminal 5

If you’re flying out of Heathrow, why not indulge in a little pre/post flight treatment?

Try the Deep Tissue back massage and body exfoliation. When they say deep tissue they mean deep tissue! Your therapist will work and pummel you like you’ve never been pummelled before. Women tend to carry tension in their back and shoulders which can result in painful knots. Fear not (pun intended) – the therapists here will work and work until they are gone. The body exfoliation involves being massaged with scented salts, showering them off, and being massaging with oils until you are smooth and lubricated. It will take all your strength not to fall asleep on the treatment table.

After your treatments, have a brief rest in the relaxation area before heading to the kitchen for lunch. Being a spa, everything will be healthy and delicious. We loved the smoked salmon salad for lunch and fresh fruit with beautiful lemon sorbet for dessert. There is free water, tea and coffee on hand throughout the day to take advantage of.

Once your food is settled, head down to the wet and thermal area and spend some time in the spa, steam room, mineral water and hydrotherapy pool.

Best for a lunchtime fix

If you work in the Canary Wharf area, make a quick trip to the Luminis Spa inside Virgin Active. Finding the time to get your eyebrows/waxing/nails done is nigh on impossible when you’ve got kids at home so use the time before and after work or at lunch time to get yourself tucked and plucked.

Best for a deep tissue Thai Massage

Thai Square Spa Covent Garden is a nominee in the 2017 World Spa Awards and is a revolution in elegance, opulence and tranquillity. We recommend the traditional Thai Massage which covers the neck, back and shoulders. The massage works on heating the body temperature and muscles using hot oils massaged into pre exfoliated skin. Once warmed up a multiple pressure points are applied and manipulated to relieve tension. Absolutely blissful.

It’s everything you can want in an indulgent spa and then some.

Best for a luxury weekend in London (sans kids)

The Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel

The Jumeirah Lowndes is a boutique hotel in the beautiful area of Belgravia, London. A five-minute walk from Harrods and round the corner from the Christian Louboutin shop, the hotel is in one of the swankiest neighbourhoods in London.

It’s everything you could want it to be – we stayed in a Junior Suite which had a living style room with a desk, sofa style seats and a large flat screen TV. The adjoining room comprised a walk in closet and catering facilities and a very sweet welcome note. They’d catered to all diets with a welcome tray containing fruit, rococo chocolates, a Nespresso coffee machine and bottled water.

Guests of the Lowndes get complimentary use of The Peak Spa at the sister Jumeirah Carlton Tower (a two minute walk away) which has a pool, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi (we used) and gym (we didn’t). Every detail has been taken into consideration and every need anticipated - leave the credit card with the hotel reception and enjoy the five star life for a night or two.
